What is the Abortion Pill?

The term “abortion pill” often refers to a regimen of two medications taken 24-48 hours apart that work to end an early pregnancy.

  • The first pill blocks the progesterone hormone that is essential for the fetus to continue to develop. Once progesterone is blocked, the pregnancy is essentially paused and the uterine lining stops thickening.
  • The second pill forces the woman to go into a period-like state causing the uterine lining to shed and expel everything inside – including the fetus.

Abortion Pill FAQ

Is the abortion pill safe?
Like any medical procedure, there are risks associated with the abortion pill. The most common risk associated with the pill is left over fetal tissue. If the second pill is not able to expel all uterine contents, there could be some remaining fetal tissue left in the uterus that can cause severe health problems such as an infection.

Do I need an appointment to receive the abortion pill?
No, you do not need to go into a clinic to receive the abortion pill, but you do need a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. In Michigan, you must take the first pill in a clinic. The second pill can be taken at home.
